You will start to see that trying to get to the Investor level on more then one island would be quite a challenge. Eventually you could start moving factories off your main island to make room for more houses, expanding the zoo and museum and of course the palace. You'll be limited by the number of islands you have settled with at least a warehouse, that's why it's advisable to grab as many islands at the start of the game as you can. The commuter pier is available at the engineer level and need to be built on your main island and the production island.

As you upgrade from level to level it will become necessary to populate other islands, with farmers and workers, and build commuter piers just to keep your work force up. Build up your main island while using other islands as production islands (you can't produce everything on one island). You could just stay at the Artisan level and settle for that, but if you want to advance to the Investors level it is much easier to do it on one island.
